Philosophy
It is interesting to note that Schopenhauer is not widely discussed in academia during this time. Metaphysics has taken a 'back seat' in the realm of scholastic thinking due to focuses on science and psychology. This might have happened because of Immanuel Kant's critique on metaphysics in his analysis of reality. However, Schopenhauer gave an answer to Kant's philosophy, and that did little to spark more conversation on that topic. Even though the answer Schopenhauer gave was grim, it was still an answer. Therefore, instead of being "so sure" about the facts of existence as psychology and other sciences try to explain, think about arguments that are not as "concrete" and then you'll find your answer.
Literature
Melville's "Moby Dick" is considered a great American Novel for reasons that do not need to be explained. That said, can we consider novels such as Hawthorne's "Scarlet Letter" or Steinbeck's "East of Eden" as in the same tier as those? What is the "great American novel." Regardless of the title, each one of these speak similar tones of American values and experiences.
South Park
This season of South Park has been great! The best episode so far has to be "Canada On Strike." I think that we all want "more money" in some way or another. A very timely episode considering the state of the economy.
